About Bovet

Bovet is a brand with a rich history that ties together multiple important regions within watchmaking. From manufacturing in Fleurier and establishing trade in London and the Canton region of China, Bovet became a highly regarded name in watchmaking in the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 2001, Pascal Raffy purchased the Bovet name and restarted the brand, bringing the brand back to prominence since the discontinuation of watches with the Bovet name in 1950. Today, the brand is an established name in haute horlogerie, winning awards and the admiration of discerning collectors.

Bovet History

Eduard Bovet was born in 1797, the son of Jean-Frédéric Bovet, an established watchmaker in Fleurier. In 1818, Eduard departed from London to the Canton region of China, where he managed the sale of four watches that were worth over one million dollars in today’s money.

Eduard founded the Bovet company in 1822 in London, with Eduard remaining in Canton, his brothers managing the shop in London, and one brother managing the manufacturing in Fleurier. During this time, the brand started the use of exhibition casebacks that allowed for the viewing of the movement (today they are recognized as the first brand to start this practice). The brand purchased the Châteu de Môitiers, a 14th-century mansion in Fleurier, and this became the brand’s headquarters.

In 1849, Eduard Bovet passed away, leaving a legacy in China with the brand being a synonym for the celestial and frequently used as a trade currency. The Bovet brand continued to succeed, winning awards and filing patents for horological developments such as a 24-hour flyback chronograph and a watch that could be used as both a pocket watch and a desk clock.

The brand’s success in the 20th century, with the remaining Bovet brothers selling the brand to Favre-Leuba, and gifting the Châteu de Môitiers back to the state of Neuchâtel. Bovet-branded watches stopped being produced in 1950, with the brand’s facilities continuing to trade hands and produce watches for other brands.

In 2001, Pascal Raffy became the sole owner of the brand, relaunched the brand in 2006 after purchasing the Châteu de Môitiers and returning the brand to its manufacturing home. The brand has been successful in the 21st century, winning multiple GPHG awards and producing innovative timepieces that continue the brand’s legacy.

Focusing on high quality and fostering close client relations, the brand only produces 800 watches a year, many of which are custom ordered through their client personalization service.

Bovet Collections

Bovet offers a wide variety of models with different configurations, but most of them fall under the following collections.

Fleurier

The Fleurier collection is a tribute to Bovet’s heritage with pocket watches, made notable by the brand’s iconic twelve o’clock crown placement. These models can be converted to either a pocket watch or desk clock, in addition to being worn as a wrist watch. Many timepieces in this collection feature complications and elaborations, such as jumphour functions, extended power reserves, tourbillons, and complex calendars.

Dimier

The Dimier collection is Bovet’s collection of conventional wrist watches, with the crown placement at three o’clock. While these watches have a conventional layout, many feature complications, including the GPHG Award winning Récital 28 Prowess 1, which is a world-timer that is able to accommodate for daylight savings time, differentiating countries that do and do not utilize daylight savings.

Bovet by Pininfarina

Bovet began their partnership with Pininfarina in 2007. This partnership with famed Italian design house has produced timepieces that combine Bovet’s heritage of pocket watches and the Fleurier collection, with Pininfarina’s knack for contemporary design resulting in sporty and modern timepieces with convertible cases.

How Much Do Bovet Watches Cost?

Bovet is a haute horology brand producing some of the finest timepieces available. In addition to using high-end materials, they often manufacture watches that feature complications, elaborated time displays, and elaborate cases that not only display the brands technical capabilities, but also increase the cost to manufacture such timepieces.

Prices start around $30,000 for certain models made in non-precious metals such as titanium and stainless steel, and can extend well into the six figures. Bovet Movements

Bovet watches use mechanical movements, both manually wound and automatic winding. Many are developed and manufactured by the brand, while others are sourced from Vaucher Manufacture. They are also highly decorated and hand-finished to a degree that puts them on par with other high-end haute horlogerie brands.

Many models include complications, including tourbillons, world timers, complex calendars, moonphase, and retrograde displays. Bovet also develops a number of calibers with extended power reserves, with the movements being able to operate for 5 days or more (depending on the model) once fully wound.

Bovet Watch Colors

Bovet is a brand that is not afraid of color. While many of the designs are classically influenced, they are available in both traditional colors such as black, white, gold, and silver, but also bright colors such as vibrant blues, greens, and reds. They also offer a customization service, allowing clients to pick colors for their watch to fit their personal tastes.

Bovet Watch Materials

Bovet watches utilize materials one would expect from a haute horlogerie brand. Case materials include stainless steel, titanium 18k gold, and platinum. Strap materials are alligator leather, rubber, or metal matching the case material. Sapphire crystals are used for the front and rear display coverings. There are many gem set models, including the use of high grade diamonds on the case and dial.

Bovet Watch Types

Bovet watches, despite their classical influence, would likely be considered more contemporary, even avant garde in design. The convertible case makes for a unique design, while suitable for formal attire, it definitely makes a statement on the wrist. The avant garde nature is further amplified in the Bovet by Pininfarina models, with a heightened sense of modernity. The Dimier collection is more traditional by modern wrist watch standards, but the use of decentralized displays and focus on complications emphasizes the brands haute horlogerie focus.
